AMZNOfficial announcement

Amazon to invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027, including €4.8 billion for AWS Frankfurt

Amazon officially announced on October 20, 2026 that it plans to invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027. Of that amount, €4.8 billion is earmarked for cloud and AI infrastructure in the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region, with the remainder supporting logistics, Amazon Leo satellite internet, Prime Video, and R&D. This major single-country growth commitment targets European data-sovereignty and low-latency AI demand, but AWS capacity, accelerator mix, and revenue timing were not disclosed.

A. Key facts

Amazon officially announced at the Invest in Germany Summit on October 20, 2026 that it will invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027.

€4.8 billion will fund cloud and AI infrastructure in the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region; other spending covers logistics, Amazon Leo, Prime Video, and a second robotics and AI lab in Berlin.

Logistics projects are expected to create more than 3,000 jobs. Amazon said it has invested more than €100 billion in Germany since 2010, including €15 billion in 2025.

Amazon invested €9.6 billion in the Frankfurt AWS Region in 2014-2023 and announced another €8.8 billion in 2024 for spending through 2026. The new €4.8 billion is a new 2027 annual plan.

B. Business significance · InveDeck interpretation

The strategy is to add German AWS capacity ahead of enterprise and public-sector demand for data localization, sovereign cloud, and low-latency generative AI.

Compliance demand from manufacturing, automotive, and public-sector customers can strengthen AWS's European enterprise position and long-term contract conversion.

Slow utilization or power and permitting delays would raise depreciation and free-cash-flow pressure. The announcement itself is not new revenue, RPO, or backlog.

C. Quantifiable impact

Confirmed figures are more than €16 billion of total 2027 Germany investment, €4.8 billion for AWS Frankfurt, and more than 3,000 jobs.

AWS equals 30% of the €16 billion floor, but the actual share is below 30% because the total is stated as more than €16 billion. Reuters converts €16 billion to about $18 billion and €4.8 billion to about $5.4 billion.

The €4.8 billion is about 2.5% of Amazon's $220 billion company-wide 2026 capex plan. This is only a scale comparison across currencies, years, and scopes; it is not part of 2026 guidance.

Incremental revenue, margin, free cash flow, and RPO cannot be quantified because power capacity, server and accelerator quantities, utilization, and contract structures were not disclosed.

D. Link to earnings and expectations

Q2 2026 AWS revenue was $42.2 billion, up 37%, and AWS operating income was $16.6 billion.

Q2 cash capital expenditures were $53.1 billion and first-half cash capex was $96.3 billion; the 10-Q said the spending primarily supported AWS technology infrastructure and logistics capacity.

TTM operating cash flow rose 33% to $161.4 billion, but TTM free cash flow was a $7.6 billion outflow because of higher AI-related property and equipment purchases. Germany is both a growth option and a commitment that can delay FCF recovery.

The plan aligns with Amazon's approximately $220 billion 2026 capex plan and capacity-shortage outlook, but does not change company-wide capex or revenue guidance or RPO.

E. Industry and supply chain · InveDeck interpretation

The project is positive for European data-center construction, power and cooling, servers, optical and Ethernet networking, and storage. Without supplier volumes, benefits cannot be assigned to NVIDIA, AMD, Broadcom, or another vendor.

Frankfurt expansion may increase pressure on Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud to invest in sovereign AI capacity in Germany and the EU.

Amazon's more than 1.3 GW of enabled carbon-free energy projects in Germany is not equivalent to dedicated data-center IT load or power secured for this investment.

Key risks are grid connections, permits, construction costs, AI-accelerator procurement, and post-completion utilization.

F. What to watch next

  • Frankfurt sites, construction and service dates, IT load in MW, and phased capex
  • GPU, Trainium, CPU, memory, and networking configuration and supplier volumes
  • Grid connections, PPAs, renewable-energy procurement, cooling, and permits
  • Timing of the €4.8 billion impact on 2027 cash capex, depreciation, and free cash flow
  • European AWS contracts, RPO/backlog conversion, utilization, and overlap with European Sovereign Cloud investment
