Nvidia China AI-Accelerator Shipments Fall 44% and Share Drops to 34% as Huawei Reaches 28%

According to an IDC study reviewed by Reuters, Nvidia shipped 678,000 data-center AI accelerators in China in the first half of 2026, down 44% year over year, for 34% unit share. Huawei shipped 572,000 units and reached 28%, narrowing the gap to six percentage points, while Alibaba's T-Head held 7%. China's total accelerator shipments reached 2.008 million, but GPUs fell 26% while non-GPU accelerators rose about 80%, indicating structural substitution. Nvidia already assumes no China Data Center compute revenue in its next-quarter outlook, so this is more a long-term market-position and ecosystem risk than a near-term guidance cut.

A. Key facts

An IDC report reviewed by Reuters on October 13, 2026 says Nvidia shipped 678,000 data-center AI accelerators in China during the first half of 2026. Shipments fell 44% year over year and represented 34% unit share.

Huawei shipped 572,000 units and reached 28%. Alibaba chip-design unit T-Head held 7%, followed by Cambricon at 5%, Baidu's Kunlunxin at 4% and Hygon at 3%. Nvidia's lead over Huawei was 106,000 units and six percentage points.

IDC estimated total China AI-accelerator shipments at 2.008 million. GPU shipments fell 26% to 991,000, while other AI accelerators rose nearly 80% to 1.016 million and surpassed GPUs by volume. These are external unit-shipment estimates, not company disclosures; product mix and revenue share were not disclosed.

B. Business significance · InveDeck interpretation

The key issue is not merely lower China revenue. Export controls and China's domestic-substitution policy are weakening Nvidia's long-term ecosystem position. If Huawei and Chinese ASIC and accelerator suppliers scale units, CUDA-centered lock-in could shift toward competition at the system and cluster level.

IDC said competition is moving from single-chip performance toward system-level capability in large computing clusters. Nvidia's networking, software and full-stack systems remain a defense, but restrictions give domestic Chinese stacks time to gain scale.

C. Quantifiable impact

Nvidia's 678,000 first-half shipments fell 44% year over year. Its lead over Huawei's 572,000 was 106,000 units and six percentage points; together they held 62% unit share.

Applying T-Head's rounded 7% share to 2.008 million total units implies roughly 141,000 units, but this is an estimate because the share is rounded. IDC did not disclose exact T-Head shipments or revenue, so the Alibaba financial effect cannot be calculated.

IDC expects total China AI-accelerator shipments to rise 19% in 2026 while GPU shipments fall 9%. These are unit forecasts across products with very different ASPs and cannot be converted into revenue growth or market value.

Nvidia reported Q2 FY2027 revenue of $96.2 billion and Data Center revenue of $89.0 billion. Data Center Hopper shipments to China were less than 1% of Data Center revenue, and the $108.0 billion plus-or-minus-2% next-quarter revenue outlook assumes no China Data Center compute revenue.

D. Link to earnings and expectations

Nvidia's latest Q2 FY2027 revenue rose 106% year over year and Data Center revenue rose 117%. Global hyperscaler and AI-infrastructure demand therefore more than offset the China shipment decline.

The IDC data is not an official Nvidia guidance change or an immediate miss signal because the company already excludes China Data Center compute revenue from next-quarter guidance. It does, however, weaken the option value of a future recovery if controls ease and reduces confidence in reclaiming China's long-term addressable market.

E. Industry and supply chain · InveDeck interpretation

The trend is positive for Huawei, T-Head, Kunlunxin, Cambricon and China's accelerator, server, networking and software ecosystems. As government, telecom and internet customers expand non-GPU adoption, demand may also rise for domestic foundry capacity, advanced packaging, memory and system integration.

It is negative for Nvidia's China shipments, share and CUDA influence, but there is no basis to reduce global GPU demand or Data Center revenue by the same percentage. IDC did not disclose the extent to which constrained supply or smuggled products were captured.

T-Head's 7% share is an external signal of Alibaba's chip-design relevance, but the split between internal cloud use and external sales, chip ASPs and margins remains undisclosed, so it cannot be treated as proof of Alibaba Cloud profitability improvement.

F. What to watch next

  • Product mix and revenue-based share behind IDC's unit figures
  • Resumption or licensing of Nvidia-compliant China products and actual next-quarter revenue
  • Production, advanced-packaging and memory constraints at Huawei and Alibaba T-Head
  • China customer migration away from CUDA and system-level performance and total cost of ownership
  • When Nvidia again includes China Data Center compute revenue in guidance
