HPE Wins $1.2 Billion Vultr Order for AMD Helios, Marking First Commercial Validation for MI455X and Juniper Networking
HPE announced on September 30, 2026 that Vultr placed a $1.2 billion order for AMD Helios AI Rack by HPE systems for U.S. data centers. This is HPE's first integrated Helios order; each rack combines 72 AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs with EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking, six HPE Juniper QFX5252 switch trays and direct liquid cooling. The order equals roughly 9.8% of HPE's fiscal Q3 2026 company revenue and 50% of AI systems orders in that quarter, but those are scale comparisons, not a revenue-recognition forecast. Rack count, total GPUs, delivery schedule, price allocation and cancellation terms were not disclosed, so AMD revenue, HPE margin and cash-flow contribution cannot yet be calculated. The contract is the first official evidence that HPE's compute-Juniper networking-cooling integration and AMD's non-NVIDIA rack-scale ecosystem have converted into a named customer order.
A. Key facts
HPE officially announced on September 30, 2026 that privately held cloud provider Vultr placed a $1.2 billion order for AMD Helios AI Rack by HPE systems to be deployed at U.S. data centers.
It is HPE's first Helios order. Each rack combines 72 AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando Vulcano AI NICs and ROCm software with six HPE Juniper Networking QFX5252 scale-up Ethernet switch trays, direct liquid cooling and HPE services.
The official materials did not disclose rack count, total GPU count, delivery start or completion dates, deposits, cancellation rights, minimum-purchase obligations or Vultr's end-customer contracts.
B. Business significance · InveDeck interpretation
For HPE, the order shows that its integrated AI infrastructure strategy—combining servers, Juniper networking, rack-scale engineering, liquid cooling and services—has converted into a large customer commitment. It is a flagship proof point for cross-selling after the Juniper acquisition.
For AMD, Helios combining MI455X, EPYC, Pensando and ROCm has secured its first explicit commercial demand signal outside the NVIDIA-centered ecosystem. The full order is not AMD revenue because it also includes HPE switches, system integration, cooling and services.
For Vultr, the order is a strategic move to secure large-scale training and inference capacity, but contract cash-conversion risk remains because the private customer's financing structure, utilization and end-customer commitments were not disclosed.
C. Quantifiable impact
The $1.2 billion order equals about 9.8% of HPE's $12.2 billion fiscal Q3 2026 revenue, 50% of its $2.4 billion AI systems orders in that quarter and about 75% of roughly $1.6 billion of AI systems revenue. These are simple scale comparisons, not estimates of revenue recognition in any particular quarter.
HPE said Helios represents more than a $1 billion networking opportunity over the next two years and that Helios networking tray orders had already exceeded $200 million. The company did not disclose whether or how those figures overlap with the $1.2 billion Vultr order, so they should not be added together.
Although 72 GPUs and six switch trays per rack are disclosed, the missing rack count and system pricing prevent calculation of total GPU and HBM volume, networking units, AMD revenue, HPE gross profit or FCF contribution.
D. Link to earnings and expectations
HPE fiscal Q3 2026 revenue was $12.2 billion, up 34% year over year, while Cloud & AI revenue was $9.0 billion, up 25.4%. Cloud & AI operating margin rose to 17.0% from 7.0% a year earlier.
AI systems orders were $2.4 billion, up more than 30% sequentially, and AI systems backlog rose 14% sequentially to a record. AI systems revenue was nearly $1.6 billion and HPE expected a sequential increase in Q4.
Existing Q4 guidance called for total revenue of $13.9 billion to $14.8 billion, Cloud & AI revenue growth of 60% to 72%, and a mid-teens Cloud & AI operating margin. The September 30 order was not in the fiscal Q3 results or backlog for the quarter ended July 31, but the absence of a delivery schedule makes it impossible to determine which quarterly guidance includes the order.
On the same day HPE guided to high-teens-to-low-20s fiscal 2027 networking revenue growth, a high-teens CAGR from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2029, and raised its annualized Juniper cost-savings target to $800 million by the end of fiscal 2028. The Vultr order supports execution of that framework but cannot be converted into a separate guidance increase.
E. Industry and supply chain · InveDeck interpretation
The supply-chain read-through spans AMD MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando NICs, high-bandwidth memory, HPE Juniper QFX switches, liquid cooling and power infrastructure. Missing quantities and timing mean the order should not be allocated as confirmed revenue for individual suppliers.
Strategically, the contract advances commercialization of an open AMD-UALink-Ethernet rack-scale alternative to NVIDIA GPUs and proprietary scale-up fabrics. HPE can now bid compute and networking together against server rivals such as Dell and Supermicro and NVIDIA-based integrated systems.
The ultimate industry impact depends on Vultr's power and data-center readiness, MI455X supply and customer utilization. Facility megawatts, power contracts and start-of-service timing were not disclosed.
