Can Big Tech fund its AI investment with the cash it generates?

As of October 9, 2026 (KST) · Consolidated cash flows from April through June 2026 · Amounts in B$

In the second quarter of 2026, Amazon and Alphabet's cash capital expenditure exceeded their operating cash flow. Microsoft and Meta still had cash left after investment, but the amounts differed substantially. A single quarter's shortfall, however, does not establish a company's financial position or the success of its AI investment.

We compared Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft over the same period using InveDeck. Microsoft's fiscal-quarter label is FY2026 Q4, but all four companies below are measured over the three months ended June 30, 2026. B$ means billions of US dollars.

Compare cash generated by operations with actual investment spending

Operating cash flow, or OCF, is the net cash entering and leaving the business through operating activities. Subtracting cash capital expenditure, or CapEx, shows the cash remaining after investment. This table uses OCF − net cash CapEx, InveDeck's “FCF · Calculated” measure.

CompanyOCFNet cash CapExCalculated FCF

Alphabet39.06944.924−5.855
Meta31.86230.116+1.746
Microsoft55.44135.802+19.639

Sources: InveDeck and each company's official results and cash flow statements. Amazon CapEx deducts $1.132 billion in proceeds from asset sales and incentives from $54.208 billion in property and equipment purchases. The FCF figures in this table are calculated for comparison; finance lease principal repayments, acquisitions, dividends, and share buybacks are not deducted separately.

In this quarter alone, investment spending exceeded operating cash flow by $7.689 billion at Amazon and $5.855 billion at Alphabet. Meta had $1.746 billion remaining, while Microsoft had $19.639 billion. These calculations show how much of the period's cash investment spending was covered by operating cash flow.

The latest quarter and the latest year tell different stories

Alphabet's quarterly FCF was approximately −$5.9 billion, but its reported trailing-12-month total was approximately +$53.3 billion. Amazon's FCF was approximately −$7.6 billion over the same trailing-12-month period. Alphabet's single-quarter cash outflow should be distinguished from Amazon's cumulative cash outflow over the latest year.

Negative FCF does not mean a company's bank balance is negative. Spending can be funded with existing cash, financial assets, debt, or equity issuance. To assess sustainability, examine cash balances, debt maturities, and future investment commitments alongside cash flow after investment.

Distinguish company FCF definitions and the scope of AI spending

Meta's directly reported FCF for this quarter was $0.784 billion. That figure deducts a further $0.962 billion of finance lease principal repayments from the $1.746 billion shown above. The two figures cover different items. Mixing calculated comparison figures with company-reported figures can make available cash look greater than it is.

This table covers each company as a whole. Amazon includes retail, logistics, and other operations, so its figures should not be read as AWS-only data. Nor is all CapEx dedicated to AI. Assess the company's overall ability to fund investment separately from the profitability of AI investment itself.

In the next quarter, compare the pace of CapEx growth with OCF growth. If investment continues expanding while OCF fails to keep up, reliance on external funding may increase. Conversely, rising OCF and recovering cash left after investment would provide evidence of an easing burden.
