EARNINGS REVIEW

Tencent, 2026 Q1 Earnings Results

Reporting period 2026-01-01 ~ 2026-03-31Release date 2026-05-13Amounts in B$ · IFRS earningsPrepared as of 2026-09-23

Historical quarterly report · Results and outlook reflect information available at the time of that release. Actual results from subsequent quarters are not incorporated into the outlook.

Advertising, games and FinTech grew, while cash generation remained strong. AI improves the efficiency of existing businesses while also creating costs for new AI products, so distinguish IFRS earnings from company-adjusted earnings.

Revenue

YoY +14.7% · +3.630 B$
Operating income

YoY +23.0% · +1.818 B$

Assessment · It is positive that established businesses' cash generation supports AI investment. The future assessment depends on whether additional profits from advertising, games and business services offset rising new AI costs. Consider short-term adjusted metrics alongside actual consolidated profitability.

In RMB terms, VAS grew 4%, Marketing Services including advertising 20%, and FinTech and Business Services 9%. The company explained that differences in Lunar New Year timing meant some increased domestic games gross receipts were not recognized as revenue this quarter.

02 Earnings sustainability · From operating income to net income

IFRS operating income was 9.734 B$, up 17% in RMB terms, while non-IFRS operating income grew 9%. The adjusted operating margin was approximately 38.5%, broadly unchanged year over year.

The company's non-IFRS operating margin excluding new AI products was 43.0%. This is a reference metric excluding specific businesses, not the actual consolidated operating margin. Profitability is not assessed as though AI investment costs did not exist.

Operating income

Net non-operating income/loss

Consolidated net income

Net income of 8.393 B$ in the existing quarterly data is attributable to the parent/shareholders. Its scope differs from consolidated net income used in the cash flow reconciliation.

03 Cash flow quality · Net income → OCF → FCF

Quarterly OCF was 14.642 B$, and company FCF was approximately 8.19 B$. In addition to cash CapEx, FCF reflects company-defined adjustments for content and leases.

Revenue growth by segment differs from payment and collection timing. In particular, cash payments for games precede revenue recognition, so short-term differences between OCF and earnings should not immediately be interpreted as sustainable margin improvement.

¹ Total net adjustments calculated as OCF minus net income. This is not a single disclosed line item; it combines non-cash items, working capital, classification differences and other adjustments.

² Company-disclosed FCF and cash CapEx are broadly rounded in the original disclosure and are shown to approximately two decimal places in B$ in the text. The third decimal place in the reconciliation above is a calculation result, not the precision of the original disclosure.

FCF versus the previous quarter · approx. 4.80 → approx. 8.19 B$, a 3.40 B$ improvement.

04 Financial capacity · Net debt and payment obligations

Previous-quarter net cash · 2025-12-31

−1.414 B$

Cash and liquid assets 54.031 / Borrowings 55.445 B$

Current-quarter net cash · 2026-03-31

5.292 B$

Cash and liquid assets 61.367 / Borrowings 56.075 B$

Net debt improved by 6.706 B$ from the previous quarter. The carrying amount of current borrowings is 7.912 B$. This may differ from the principal maturity schedule.

Company-reported net cash includes non-current time deposits, treasury products and other items. The comparison table below uses cash equivalents and current time deposits, a narrower scope than company-reported net cash. The valuation of equity investments is not added as cash.

Common definitions · Cash and liquid assets = cash equivalents + current investments and deposits. Borrowings = carrying amount of interest-bearing debt (current + non-current), excluding separate lease liabilities. This differs from total liabilities of 121.740 B$. Restricted cash, non-current securities and non-current deposits are excluded from cash and liquid assets.

05 Investment, capital allocation and cash recovery

Cash generation from existing businesses is funding AI investment. However, new AI product costs are already affecting adjusted operating margin, so assess additional profits and FCF after investment alongside user metrics.

This quarter, cash CapEx/revenue was 18.8% and company-defined FCF/revenue was 28.9%. These ratios should not be used as a simple ranking of companies with different business models and FCF definitions.

06 Next-quarter and full-year outlook and implications

The company described applying AI to existing businesses and expanding new AI products. No future revenue or AI investment payback period is calculated where no official numerical range is available.

Indented rows are components of, or reference items for, the parent metric. Net cash = cash and liquid assets − borrowings. Depending on company definitions, FCF may include additional adjustments such as lease principal and therefore differ from operating cash flow − cash CapEx. See the cash flow discussion for the detailed definition.

Annual totals and year-to-date totals precede the quarters for each year. Revenue, earnings and cash flow are sums of quarterly values; operating margin equals total operating income divided by total revenue; net cash, cash and borrowings are the final quarter's ending balances. Do not make a simple annual comparison of totals covering different period lengths.

Net cash = cash and liquid assets − borrowings. A negative value indicates net debt. Changes in FCF and net cash are shown as absolute amounts in B$. Quarterly values were not adjusted to match disclosed annual totals.

Comparison bases, calculations and quarterly sources

Calculations and presentation · Amounts in B$. US disclosures in millions of dollars were preserved by dividing by 1,000. Where only cumulative cash flow was available, the preceding cumulative amount in the same fiscal year was subtracted. YoY, QoQ and margins were calculated before display rounding. Earnings growth from negative or 0 bases is shown as a sign change and/or absolute amount.

Interpretations and implications are the author's judgments. No numerically unverified probabilities of achieving targets are assigned.

Currency conversion · Earnings and cash flows use the quarterly average of 6.921820 RMB/USD; balances use 6.8980 RMB/USD as of 2026-03-31. Each historical quarter also uses its own exchange rates.
