EARNINGS REVIEW
Tencent 2024 Q2 — Game recovery joins advertising growth
Historical earnings report · Management guidance reflects expectations at the time of the release, not subsequent outcomes. The financial comparison uses the site’s normalized dataset, including comparative figures restated in later filings.
Domestic games grew 9% on DnF Mobile and VALORANT, and international games also rose 9%. Advertising increased 19%, but weak consumption limited FinTech and Business Services growth to 4%.
Assessment · Gross-receipts growth exceeded revenue growth in both game markets. Track deferred conversion alongside slower payments, consumer lending and reduced budgets at some internet advertisers. Assess whether older-game revitalization accompanies new releases. Lower net cash from shareholder returns does not itself mean weaker operations, but reduces remaining flexibility. Separate operating weakness, investment, dividends and buybacks when judging financial risk.
01 Business growth and drivers
Domestic games grew 9% on DnF Mobile and VALORANT, and international games also rose 9%. Advertising increased 19%, but weak consumption limited FinTech and Business Services growth to 4%.
02 Earnings quality and comparability
Gross profit rose 21% and adjusted operating profit 27%, outpacing revenue growth of 8%. Adjusted net-profit growth of 53% is not the same as operating growth and includes below-operating-line effects.
03 Cash flow, investment and financial position
Company-reported FCF rose 35%. Buybacks and payment of the prior-year final dividend reduced net cash sequentially; that decline does not by itself indicate weaker operations. Net cash or net debt in this paragraph follows the company definition, including term deposits and others; its scope differs from the comparison table’s cash-and-current-investments definition.
04 Management commentary and outlook
Pony Ma emphasized evergreen engagement and new-game launches and reiterated platform and AI investment. The release did not provide numerical next-quarter revenue guidance.
05 Investment interpretation and next checks
Gross-receipts growth exceeded revenue growth in both game markets.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.
Definitions and evidence coverage
A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.
Management commentary is based on the original release; it does not imply completed conference-call Q&A review. Financial tables use the existing audited InveDeck dataset and may include comparative figures from subsequent filings.
Local-currency growth in the narrative may differ from B$ table growth because of FX. Company-reported FCF is not identical to the common OCF-minus-PP&E definition.
Tencent capital-expenditure growth in the narrative refers to the original release measure of asset additions, which differs from cash capital spending in the tables. The late-2023 move of other gains below operating profit can also make original margins differ from later comparative tables.
