EARNINGS REVIEW
Tencent 2024 Q1 — Game gross receipts recover ahead of recognized revenue
Historical earnings report · Management guidance reflects expectations at the time of the release, not subsequent outcomes. The financial comparison uses the site’s normalized dataset, including comparative figures restated in later filings.
International game receipts rose 34% but revenue only 3%; domestic receipts rose 3% while revenue fell 2%. Revenue deferral explains the gap. Advertising grew 26% and FinTech and Business Services 7%.
Assessment · The key is the lag from receipts to recognized revenue. Slower offline consumption and lower withdrawal fees constrained FinTech, so advertising strength does not establish a company-wide recovery. Game gross receipts lead recognized revenue because revenue is deferred over service periods. Faster receipts need not immediately produce equal sales growth. Deferred revenue is not all current profit; service costs and retention obligations remain.
01 Business growth and drivers
International game receipts rose 34% but revenue only 3%; domestic receipts rose 3% while revenue fell 2%. Revenue deferral explains the gap. Advertising grew 26% and FinTech and Business Services 7%.
02 Earnings quality and comparability
Revenue rose 6%, gross profit 23%, and adjusted operating profit 30%. Higher-margin Video Accounts advertising and Mini Games fees improved the revenue mix.
03 Cash flow, investment and financial position
Company-reported FCF increased just 0.4%, broadly flat. The gap between profit and cash growth matters as larger buybacks and AI investment proceeded together.
04 Management commentary and outlook
Management said reorganizations in major games were improving receipts and laying the groundwork for future revenue recovery. It maintained the plan for over HKD100bn of 2024 repurchases.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.
Definitions and evidence coverage
A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.
Management commentary is based on the original release; it does not imply completed conference-call Q&A review. Financial tables use the existing audited InveDeck dataset and may include comparative figures from subsequent filings.
Local-currency growth in the narrative may differ from B$ table growth because of FX. Company-reported FCF is not identical to the common OCF-minus-PP&E definition.
Tencent capital-expenditure growth in the narrative refers to the original release measure of asset additions, which differs from cash capital spending in the tables. The late-2023 move of other gains below operating profit can also make original margins differ from later comparative tables.
