EARNINGS REVIEW

Platform delays and inventory charges weigh on profit

FY25 Q3 · 2025-03-31Release date 2025-05-06B$ · USD billions

Historical earnings report · Management guidance reflects expectations at the time of the release, not subsequent outcomes. The financial comparison uses the site’s normalized dataset, including comparative figures restated in later filings.

Positive cash flow is welcome but does not erase declining margins and earnings. Recovery must account for inventory-generation losses, customer decision delays and financing costs.

02 Business drivers and management commentary

Server and storage revenue was $4.459 billion and accessories $0.141 billion. The CEO said “some customers delayed making platform decisions”. That explains shipment timing but does not guarantee complete future conversion of deferred demand.

03 Earnings quality and special items

Gross margin fell to 9.6% from 15.5%. The 10-Q describes a $0.1096 billion year-on-year increase in inventory write-down adjustments involving older GPUs and components. A convertible-note extinguishment loss also affected net income and is separate from server operating margin.

04 Cash flow, investment and financial position

Quarterly OCF was $0.627 billion, cash PP&E purchases $0.033 billion and analytical FCF $0.594 billion. Cumulative flows sharing the same fiscal-year start were subtracted, without allocating annual rounding residuals. A separate company-defined FCF was not verified and is left blank.

At period end, cash and cash equivalents were $2.536 billion; liquid financial assets including separately disclosed marketable equities were $2.540 billion. Interest-bearing debt was $2.492 billion, including $0.064 billion of current bank borrowings. Liquid assets less borrowings were $0.047 billion. Restricted cash, illiquid equity holdings and operating leases are excluded. Total accounting liabilities of $4.359 billion are not substituted for debt. Debt includes $2.385 billion of convertible notes at carrying value without double counting bank debt.

05 RPO and contract scope

Disclosed remaining performance obligations (RPO) was $0.6658 billion. The disclosure applies the exemption for contracts with an original duration of one year or less. It is therefore neither total server backlog nor guaranteed next-year sales, and is not added to orders as if they were the same measure.

06 Guidance and assessment at release

Next-quarter revenue guidance was $5.6–6.4 billion, and FY25 guidance was reduced from $23.5–25 billion to $21.8–22.6 billion. The timing between expected demand and customer platform decisions was a material condition.

Positive cash flow is welcome but does not erase declining margins and earnings. Recovery must account for inventory-generation losses, customer decision delays and financing costs.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.

Definitions and evidence coverage

A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.
