EARNINGS REVIEW
Meta 2022 Q3 earnings report
Historical earnings report · Management guidance reflects expectations at the time of the release, not subsequent outcomes. The financial comparison uses the site’s normalized dataset, including comparative figures restated in later filings.
Advertising price pressure increased the importance of monitoring the earnings burden of AI and Reality Labs investment.
Assessment · Advertising price pressure increased the importance of monitoring the earnings burden of AI and Reality Labs investment. An operating margin of 20.4% alongside quarterly FCF of 0.336 B$ distinguishes earnings from the investment burden.
01 Business performance
Advertising-based cash generation should be separated from Reality Labs development losses. Meta also uses AI for advertising recommendations and engagement, so higher AI usage is not converted into external AI-service revenue.
Advertising impressions changed +17% year over year and average price per ad changed -18%. Separating volume and price distinguishes greater usage from better monetization. Simply adding the two rates does not produce the exact revenue growth rate.
| Business segment | Revenue B$ | Year over year | Operating income B$ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family of Apps | 27.429 | -3.6% | 9.336 |
| Reality Labs | 0.285 | -48.9% | -3.672 |
02 Earnings quality
Consolidated operating income of 5.664 B$ on revenue of 27.714 B$ implies a 20.4% operating margin. Net income was 4.395 B$; the -1.269 B$ difference from operating income combines nonoperating and tax effects. The entire difference is not classified as cash earnings or a one-off item.
03 Cash flow, investment and financial position
On the common quarterly comparison basis, OCF of 9.691 B$ less cash CapEx of 9.355 B$ produced FCF of 0.336 B$. CapEx/revenue was 33.8% and FCF margin was 1.2%. Cash remained after capital investment, but this is before dividends, repurchases, acquisitions and debt repayment.
Quarter-end cash and current investments were 41.776 B$, interest-bearing borrowings at carrying amount were 9.922 B$, and net cash was 31.854 B$. Borrowings include current and noncurrent debt and exclude separately disclosed lease liabilities. Negative net cash means net debt. Total liabilities, which also include trade payables and leases, are a different measure.
Direct quarterly operating cash flow of 9.691 B$ less net cash PP&E purchases of 9.355 B$ gives common FCF of 0.336 B$. Deducting finance-lease principal of 0.163 B$ gives company FCF of 0.173 B$, matching the original release. Rounding differences in cumulative disclosures have not been allocated to the quarter.
Company-reported CapEx and FCF may include finance-lease principal payments. The common comparison figures above retain existing InveDeck definitions and are not assumed identical to company-reported FCF.
04 Management commentary and contemporaneous outlook
The key questions are how far rising impressions offset falling prices and how well Family of Apps profit funds Reality Labs losses and investment.
At release, next-quarter revenue guidance was 30–32.5 B$. The guidance range is distinct from subsequent realized results.
At release, full-year 2022 CapEx guidance was 32–33 B$ on the company-defined basis. This is not quarterly cash CapEx and is a plan subject to subsequent revisions for investment timing, hardware prices and data-center execution.
The initial 2023 CapEx outlook provided alongside this was 34–39 B$.
05 Interpretation and follow-up checks
Separate advertising impressions, price per ad, Family of Apps profit and Reality Labs losses. Advertising-efficiency gains from recommendation AI and long-term AI research have different payback paths and timing and should not be collapsed into one AI outcome.
On the same dataset basis, year-over-year revenue changed by -1.296 B$, operating margin by -15.5 percentage points and FCF by -9.442 B$. First test whether sales, earnings and cash move together. Use this absolute FCF change rather than a growth rate when the comparison period had negative FCF.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.
Definitions and evidence coverage
A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.
