Assessment · AI-system conversion supported sales while gross margin declined. H3C disposal proceeds must not be mixed into quarterly OCF or recurring FCF.
01 Business drivers
Server grew 35% to $4.3 billion at a 10.8% margin. Intelligent Edge declined 23% to $1.1 billion at 22.4%, and Hybrid Cloud declined 7% to $1.3 billion at 5.1%.
02 Earnings and comparison basis
On the filed comparative basis, revenue was $7.710 billion, operating income $0.547 billion, operating margin 7.09%, and net income $0.512 billion. Non-operating items and tax can separate net earnings from operating profit; the table distinguishes absolute changes from margin-point changes.
Against the previous quarter, the absolute changes were +0.506 B$ in revenue and +0.122 B$ in operating income.
Against the year-earlier quarter, the absolute changes were +0.708 B$ in revenue and +0.076 B$ in operating income.
Revenue rose 10%, while GAAP gross margin fell 4.2 percentage points to 31.6%. Approximately $2.1 billion received on September 4 from the partial H3C sale belongs to the following quarter, not this July-end quarter.
03 Cash flow and investment burden
Total quarterly OCF of $1.154 billion less net cash CapEx of $0.481 billion gives common FCF of $0.673 billion. Company FCF was $0.669 billion. Cumulative cash-flow subtraction uses the same fiscal-year start and business perimeter; acquisition consideration is excluded from CapEx.
HPE company FCF adjusts cash exchange-rate effects after net cash CapEx and can differ from common FCF. That adjustment is not operating cash generation, and asset-sale proceeds enter net cash CapEx only once.
04 Liquidity and borrowings
Quarter-end liquid assets were $3.642 billion, interest-bearing borrowings $11.803 billion and net cash $-8.161 billion. A negative net-cash balance denotes net debt. Liquid assets include cash, cash equivalents and verified short-term investments; total accounting liabilities of $38.718 billion are a different measure from borrowings.
05 RPO and forward-looking indicators
HPE’s note describes deferred revenue, so that amount is not displayed as company-wide RPO. An SEC XBRL RPO tag alone does not broaden the disclosed scope. Unavailable does not mean zero, and ARR or a demand pipeline is not a substitute.
06 Guidance at the release date
At the announcement, FY24 Q4 guidance was $8.1–8.4 billion of revenue, $0.76–0.81 GAAP EPS and $0.52–0.57 non-GAAP EPS. Expected H3C-related gains contributed to the GAAP/non-GAAP difference; they are different earnings bases. Forecasts are separate from realized results.
07 Management remarks in the earnings release
Antonio Neri characterized the results as “We delivered a strong third quarter, with impressive…”. This brief quotation records management’s assessment in the original release; it does not establish review of conference-call Q&A.
08 CFO assessment

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.
Definitions and evidence coverage
A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.
This report reviews the quarter and comparative figures in official earnings releases and financial filings. Segment descriptions and guidance retain their original announcement-date scope. It does not imply completion of a full conference-call and Q&A review.
