Assessment · Annual growth and the recent-quarter decline require separate conclusions. Year-end collections were strong, but Compute/Storage weakness and impairment base effects still qualify the earnings picture.

01 Business drivers

Intelligent Edge grew 41% to $1.4 billion and HPC & AI 37% to $1.2 billion, while Compute fell 31% to $2.6 billion and Storage 13% to $1.1 billion. Quarterly revenue declined 7%, whereas FY23 annual revenue rose 2% to approximately $29.1 billion.

02 Earnings and comparison basis

On the filed comparative basis, revenue was $7.351 billion, operating income $0.507 billion, operating margin 6.90%, and net income $0.642 billion. Non-operating items and tax can separate net earnings from operating profit; the table distinguishes absolute changes from margin-point changes.

Against the previous quarter, the absolute changes were +0.349 B$ in revenue and +0.036 B$ in operating income.

Against the year-earlier quarter, the absolute changes were -0.520 B$ in revenue and +0.846 B$ in operating income.

The prior-year $0.905 billion goodwill impairment creates a base effect in GAAP EPS growth. Quarterly company FCF of approximately $2.3 billion exceeded the roughly $2.2 billion annual total because earlier quarters consumed cash; it is not a normal quarterly run rate.

03 Cash flow and investment burden

Total quarterly OCF of $2.843 billion less net cash CapEx of $0.420 billion gives common FCF of $2.423 billion. Company FCF was $2.321 billion. Cumulative cash-flow subtraction uses the same fiscal-year start and business perimeter; acquisition consideration is excluded from CapEx.

HPE company FCF adjusts cash exchange-rate effects after net cash CapEx and can differ from common FCF. That adjustment is not operating cash generation, and asset-sale proceeds enter net cash CapEx only once.

04 Liquidity and borrowings

Quarter-end liquid assets were $4.273 billion, interest-bearing borrowings $12.355 billion and net cash $-8.082 billion. A negative net-cash balance denotes net debt. Liquid assets include cash, cash equivalents and verified short-term investments; total accounting liabilities of $35.915 billion are a different measure from borrowings.

05 RPO and forward-looking indicators

HPE’s note describes deferred revenue, so that amount is not displayed as company-wide RPO. An SEC XBRL RPO tag alone does not broaden the disclosed scope. Unavailable does not mean zero, and ARR or a demand pipeline is not a substitute.

06 Guidance at the release date

At the announcement, Guidance was $6.9–7.3 billion of FY24 Q1 revenue, 2–4% FY24 constant-currency revenue growth and $1.9–2.1 billion of company FCF. Forecasts are separate from realized results.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.

Definitions and evidence coverage

A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.

This report reviews the quarter and comparative figures in official earnings releases and financial filings. Segment descriptions and guidance retain their original announcement-date scope. It does not imply completion of a full conference-call and Q&A review.
