EARNINGS REVIEW
Networking profit and declining Compute sales
Historical earnings report · Management guidance reflects expectations at the time of the release, not subsequent outcomes. The financial comparison uses the site’s normalized dataset, including comparative figures restated in later filings.
Intelligent Edge grew 50% to $1.4 billion at a 29.7% margin. Compute fell 13% to $2.6 billion with margin down to 10.9%. Storage declined 5% to $1.1 billion; HPC & AI grew 1% to $0.836 billion at a negative 0.8% margin.
Assessment · The durability of networking profit and stabilization in Compute are separate tests. Consolidated cash conversion should be assessed independently of segment growth rates.
01 Business drivers
Intelligent Edge grew 50% to $1.4 billion at a 29.7% margin. Compute fell 13% to $2.6 billion with margin down to 10.9%. Storage declined 5% to $1.1 billion; HPC & AI grew 1% to $0.836 billion at a negative 0.8% margin.
02 Earnings and comparison basis
On the filed comparative basis, revenue was $7.002 billion, operating income $0.471 billion, operating margin 6.73%, and net income $0.464 billion. Non-operating items and tax can separate net earnings from operating profit; the table distinguishes absolute changes from margin-point changes.
Against the previous quarter, the absolute changes were +0.029 B$ in revenue and -0.049 B$ in operating income.
Against the year-earlier quarter, the absolute changes were +0.051 B$ in revenue and +0.005 B$ in operating income.
Business mix materially affects consolidated earnings. Edge’s strong profitability cannot be assigned to HPC & AI, nor can all AI-related sales be classified as high-margin revenue.
03 Cash flow and investment burden
Total quarterly OCF of $1.525 billion less net cash CapEx of $0.569 billion gives common FCF of $0.956 billion. Company FCF was $0.955 billion. Cumulative cash-flow subtraction uses the same fiscal-year start and business perimeter; acquisition consideration is excluded from CapEx.
HPE company FCF adjusts cash exchange-rate effects after net cash CapEx and can differ from common FCF. That adjustment is not operating cash generation, and asset-sale proceeds enter net cash CapEx only once.
04 Liquidity and borrowings
Quarter-end liquid assets were $2.921 billion, interest-bearing borrowings $13.352 billion and net cash $-10.431 billion. A negative net-cash balance denotes net debt. Liquid assets include cash, cash equivalents and verified short-term investments; total accounting liabilities of $35.738 billion are a different measure from borrowings.
05 RPO and forward-looking indicators
HPE’s note describes deferred revenue, so that amount is not displayed as company-wide RPO. An SEC XBRL RPO tag alone does not broaden the disclosed scope. Unavailable does not mean zero, and ARR or a demand pipeline is not a substitute.
06 Guidance at the release date
At the announcement, FY23 Q4 guidance was $7.2–7.5 billion of revenue, $0.36–0.40 GAAP EPS and $0.48–0.52 non-GAAP EPS. Annual company FCF guidance was $1.9–2.1 billion. Forecasts are separate from realized results.
07 Management remarks in the earnings release
Antonio Neri characterized the results as “HPE delivered another solid quarter in Q3, powered…”. This brief quotation records management’s assessment in the original release; it does not establish review of conference-call Q&A.
08 CFO assessment
The durability of networking profit and stabilization in Compute are separate tests. Consolidated cash conversion should be assessed independently of segment growth rates.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.
Definitions and evidence coverage
A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.
This report reviews the quarter and comparative figures in official earnings releases and financial filings. Segment descriptions and guidance retain their original announcement-date scope. It does not imply completion of a full conference-call and Q&A review.
