Russia charges and supply constraints

FY22 Q2 · 2022-04-30Release date 2022-06-01B$ · USD billions

Historical earnings report · Management guidance reflects expectations at the time of the release, not subsequent outcomes. The financial comparison uses the site’s normalized dataset, including comparative figures restated in later filings.

Intelligent Edge reached $0.867 billion, up 8%, and HPC & AI $0.710 billion, up 4%. Compute was roughly flat at $3.0 billion with a 13.9% margin supported by pricing, whereas supply constraints and delayed acceptance pushed HPC & AI margin to negative 5.6%.

Assessment · Pricing resilience was offset by exit charges and supply problems. Positive OCF alongside negative post-investment FCF does not yet establish restored funding capacity.

02 Earnings and comparison basis

On the filed comparative basis, revenue was $6.713 billion, operating income $0.207 billion, operating margin 3.08%, and net income $0.250 billion. Non-operating items and tax can separate net earnings from operating profit; the table distinguishes absolute changes from margin-point changes.

Against the previous quarter, the absolute changes were -0.248 B$ in revenue and -0.241 B$ in operating income.

GAAP gross margin fell to 32.4%; management identified $0.105 billion of Russia-related cost-of-sales charges as a major factor. Total Russia-related charges affecting EPS were $0.126 billion. The total and its cost-of-sales component must not be added together.

03 Cash flow and investment burden

Total quarterly OCF of $0.379 billion less net cash CapEx of $0.590 billion gives common FCF of $-0.211 billion. Company FCF was $-0.211 billion. Cumulative cash-flow subtraction uses the same fiscal-year start and business perimeter; acquisition consideration is excluded from CapEx.

HPE company FCF adjusts cash exchange-rate effects after net cash CapEx and can differ from common FCF. That adjustment is not operating cash generation, and asset-sale proceeds enter net cash CapEx only once.

04 Liquidity and borrowings

Quarter-end liquid assets were $3.028 billion, interest-bearing borrowings $13.501 billion and net cash $-10.473 billion. A negative net-cash balance denotes net debt. Liquid assets include cash, cash equivalents and verified short-term investments; total accounting liabilities of $35.742 billion are a different measure from borrowings.

05 RPO and forward-looking indicators

HPE’s note describes deferred revenue, so that amount is not displayed as company-wide RPO. An SEC XBRL RPO tag alone does not broaden the disclosed scope. Unavailable does not mean zero, and ARR or a demand pipeline is not a substitute.

06 Guidance at the release date

At the announcement, FY22 Q3 guidance was $0.22–0.32 GAAP EPS and $0.44–0.54 non-GAAP EPS. FY22 non-GAAP EPS guidance of $1.96–2.10 reflected currency and the Russia exit. Forecasts are separate from realized results.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.

Definitions and evidence coverage

A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.

This report reviews the quarter and comparative figures in official earnings releases and financial filings. Segment descriptions and guidance retain their original announcement-date scope. It does not imply completion of a full conference-call and Q&A review.
