EARNINGS REVIEW
Pricing resilience and inventory funding
Historical earnings report · Management guidance reflects expectations at the time of the release, not subsequent outcomes. The financial comparison uses the site’s normalized dataset, including comparative figures restated in later filings.
Intelligent Edge produced $0.901 billion, up 11%, and Compute $3.0 billion, up 1%. Pricing lifted Compute margin to 13.8%, while customer-acceptance delays and supply constraints left HPC & AI revenue of $0.790 billion with a negative 0.9% margin.
Assessment · Pricing power was visible, but supply constraints, acceptance delays and inventory tied up cash. The next test is conversion of demand into deliveries and collections.
01 Business drivers
Intelligent Edge produced $0.901 billion, up 11%, and Compute $3.0 billion, up 1%. Pricing lifted Compute margin to 13.8%, while customer-acceptance delays and supply constraints left HPC & AI revenue of $0.790 billion with a negative 0.9% margin.
02 Earnings and comparison basis
On the filed comparative basis, revenue was $6.961 billion, operating income $0.448 billion, operating margin 6.44%, and net income $0.513 billion. Non-operating items and tax can separate net earnings from operating profit; the table distinguishes absolute changes from margin-point changes.
Against the previous quarter, the absolute changes were -0.393 B$ in revenue and +0.098 B$ in operating income.
Management attributed negative cash flow to seasonality and strategic inventory actions supporting demand. A 33.7% GAAP gross margin coexisted with negative OCF and FCF, so stronger accounting margins did not establish stronger cash capacity.
03 Cash flow and investment burden
Total quarterly OCF of $-0.076 billion less net cash CapEx of $0.501 billion gives common FCF of $-0.577 billion. Company FCF was $-0.577 billion. Cumulative cash-flow subtraction uses the same fiscal-year start and business perimeter; acquisition consideration is excluded from CapEx.
HPE company FCF adjusts cash exchange-rate effects after net cash CapEx and can differ from common FCF. That adjustment is not operating cash generation, and asset-sale proceeds enter net cash CapEx only once.
04 Liquidity and borrowings
Quarter-end liquid assets were $3.861 billion, interest-bearing borrowings $14.072 billion and net cash $-10.211 billion. A negative net-cash balance denotes net debt. Liquid assets include cash, cash equivalents and verified short-term investments; total accounting liabilities of $37.508 billion are a different measure from borrowings.
05 RPO and forward-looking indicators
HPE’s note describes deferred revenue, so that amount is not displayed as company-wide RPO. An SEC XBRL RPO tag alone does not broaden the disclosed scope. Unavailable does not mean zero, and ARR or a demand pipeline is not a substitute.
06 Guidance at the release date
At the announcement, FY22 Q2 guidance was $0.18–0.26 GAAP EPS and $0.41–0.49 non-GAAP EPS. FY22 company FCF guidance remained $1.8–2.0 billion. Forecasts are separate from realized results.
07 Management remarks in the earnings release
Antonio Neri characterized the results as “The quarter was characterized by robust customer demand…”. This brief quotation records management’s assessment in the original release; it does not establish review of conference-call Q&A.
08 CFO assessment
Pricing power was visible, but supply constraints, acceptance delays and inventory tied up cash. The next test is conversion of demand into deliveries and collections.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.
Definitions and evidence coverage
A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.
This report reviews the quarter and comparative figures in official earnings releases and financial filings. Segment descriptions and guidance retain their original announcement-date scope. It does not imply completion of a full conference-call and Q&A review.
