EARNINGS REVIEW
Alibaba, FY2027 Q1 Earnings Results
AI Cloud growth accelerated, but company-wide earnings and FCF revealed the investment burden. Cloud improvement was insufficient to offset the overall profitability decline associated with e-commerce, AI development and capital investment this quarter.
Assessment · Improved cloud growth and earnings occurred alongside pressure on company-wide earnings and cash. Assessing AI growth’s contribution to total profitability requires tracking cost growth after expanded new investment and the recovery in FCF.
Key management and company statements
Earnings release · Excerpt from the original“Alibaba Cloud’s external revenue growth accelerated to 45%”Meaning · Alibaba Cloud external-customer revenue growth accelerated to 45%.
Context · Company-reported growth is in RMB. Total cloud revenue including intercompany transactions and external-customer revenue have different scopes.
Original statement ↗“our overall e-commerce business delivered resilient profits”Meaning · The e-commerce businesses overall maintained solid earnings.
Context · E-commerce adjusted EBITA and company-wide GAAP operating income differ in scope and adjustments.
Original statement ↗01 Revenue, operating income and results versus expectations
Year over year · revenue 34.239 → 39.524 B$ (+15.4% · +5.285 B$), operating income 4.837 → 2.228 B$ (−53.9% · −2.609 B$).
Quarter over quarter · revenue 35.161 → 39.524 B$ (+12.4% · +4.363 B$), operating income −0.123 → 2.228 B$ (turned profitable · +2.351 B$), operating margin −0.3% → 5.6% (+6.0%p).
Company-reported consolidated revenue growth was +9% in RMB. AI Cloud & Compute Services grew +45%, and AI-related product revenue posted triple-digit growth for 12 consecutive quarters. Customer management revenue declined −7%, but grew +1% excluding the revenue-deduction programs explained by the company. The latter is a separate adjusted measure.
The YoY and QoQ figures at the top are in B$, translated at each quarter’s average exchange rate. Company-reported growth rates in the narrative are in RMB and may differ because of currency effects.
02 Earnings sustainability · From operating income to net income
GAAP operating income declined 57% in RMB. In addition to lower adjusted EBITA, it reflected goodwill impairment and provisions related to the European Union’s Digital Services Act. The fact that some expenses are exceptional does not eliminate the underlying profitability decline from investment.
Goodwill impairment was 0.655 B$. Company adjusted EBITA was 4.016 B$, down 30% in RMB, while AI Cloud adjusted EBITA was 0.827 B$, up 133%. Adjusted EBITA should not be compared directly with GAAP operating income.
- Operating income
- 2.228 B$
- Net non-operating income
- 1.050 B$
- Income tax expense
- −1.881 B$
- After-tax equity-method income/loss
- 0.137 B$
- Consolidated net income
- 1.535 B$
Net income of 1.560 B$ in the existing quarterly dataset is attributable to the parent/shareholders. Its scope differs from consolidated net income used in the cash flow bridge.
03 Cash flow quality · Net income → OCF → FCF
Company-defined FCF was −6.564 B$. Cash CapEx and FCF apply the company’s exclusions for land and office-related items and other adjustments. They should not be ranked on the same basis as the simple OCF−net cash PP&E measure used for US companies.
Investment spending exceeds OCF, while net borrowing inflows of approximately 1.617 B$ are financing activities. Even if borrowing supports period-end cash, it is not classified as an improvement in FCF.
- Consolidated net income

- Total net adjustments for noncash items, working capital and other items¹
- 1.837 B$
- Operating cash flow

¹ Total net adjustments calculated as OCF−net income. This is not a single disclosed line item; it combines noncash items, working capital, classification differences and other adjustments.
² Difference between company FCF and OCF−cash CapEx. The detailed scope follows the explanation above and the original company definition.
FCF versus previous quarter · −2.499 → −6.564 B$, 4.065 B$ deterioration.
04 Financial capacity · Net debt and payment obligations
Previous-quarter net cash · 2026-03-31
Cash and current investments 41.583 / Debt 37.692 B$
Current-quarter net cash · 2026-06-30
Cash and current investments 43.856 / Debt 39.282 B$
Net debt improved by 0.683 B$ from the previous quarter. The carrying amount of current debt is 4.512 B$. It may differ from the principal maturity schedule.
The company’s broader disclosed cash and liquid-asset measure was 69.933 B$ at period-end. The common table below includes only cash equivalents and short-term investments, making it smaller than the company figure that includes long-term deposits and other items. Mixing these scopes would overstate or understate net cash.
Common definition · Cash and current investments = cash equivalents + current investments and deposits. Debt = carrying amount of interest-bearing borrowings (current + noncurrent), excluding separately reported lease liabilities. This differs from total liabilities of 125.011 B$. Restricted cash, noncurrent securities and noncurrent deposits are excluded from cash and current investments.
05 Investment, capital allocation and cash returns
AI Cloud adjusted EBITA margin was approximately 12%. Cloud is progressing in converting growth into earnings, but this does not mean it has recovered all company-wide investment and new AI business costs. AI-related product revenue expansion should be assessed alongside company-defined FCF.
This quarter, cash CapEx/revenue is 25.2% and company-defined FCF/revenue is −16.6%. These ratios should not be used as a simple ranking of companies with different business models and FCF definitions.
06 Next-quarter and full-year outlook: implications
Management described a focus on expanding integrated AI infrastructure and AI product and service capabilities. This explains investment direction and has not been converted into next-quarter revenue figures or a probability of achieving targets.

Indented rows are components or reference items for the parent metric. Net cash = cash and current investments − debt. Depending on the company definition, FCF may include additional adjustments such as lease principal and therefore differ from operating cash flow − cash CapEx. See the cash flow discussion for the detailed definition.
Annual totals and year-to-date totals appear before each year’s quarters. Revenue, earnings and cash flow are sums of quarterly figures; margin is total operating income ÷ total revenue; net cash, cash and debt are balances at the end of the last quarter. Do not treat totals covering different lengths of time as directly comparable annual figures.
Net cash = cash and current investments − debt. A negative figure indicates net debt. Changes in FCF and net cash are shown as absolute amounts in B$. Quarterly figures have not been adjusted to force reconciliation with disclosed annual totals.
Comparison bases, calculation methods and quarterly sources
Calculation and presentation · Amounts in B$. Figures disclosed in millions of US dollars are divided by 1,000 without altering the source values. Where only cumulative cash flows are available, the previous cumulative period within the same fiscal year is deducted. YoY, QoQ and margins are calculated using amounts before display rounding. Earnings changes from negative or 0 bases are expressed as profit/loss transitions and absolute amounts.

Currency translation · Earnings and cash flow use the quarterly average of 6.804787 RMB/USD; balances use 6.7851 RMB/USD as of 2026-06-30. Each historical quarter also uses its own exchange rate.
