EARNINGS REVIEW
Alibaba, FY2026 Q4 Earnings Results
Historical quarterly report · Results and outlook reflect information available at the time of that release. Actual results from later quarters have not been incorporated into the outlook.
Despite accelerating Cloud growth and expanding China e-commerce, investment in new businesses and quick commerce pressured operating results and cash flow. Consolidated net income was positive because of investment valuation gains and must be distinguished from the core operating loss.
Assessment · Cloud growth alone is insufficient grounds for optimism about company-wide performance. A more favorable assessment requires operating recovery independent of investment valuation gains and a narrower FCF deficit. At present, both the effects of growth investment and its cost burden must be monitored.
Key management and company statements
Earnings release · Excerpt from the original“progressed from incubation to commercialization at scale”Meaning · AI investment has progressed from incubation to commercialization at scale.
Context · This is management’s assessment of external-customer Cloud revenue growth and AI product adoption. It does not mean company-wide profitability has already recovered.
Original statement ↗01 Revenue, operating income and results versus expectations
Year over year · revenue 32.512 → 35.161 B$ (+8.1% · +2.649 B$), operating income 3.914 → −0.123 B$ (−103.1% · −4.036 B$).
Quarter over quarter · revenue 40.181 → 35.161 B$ (−12.5% · −5.020 B$), operating income 1.502 → −0.123 B$ (−108.2% · −1.624 B$), operating margin 3.7% → −0.3% (−4.1%p).
The company reported consolidated revenue growth of 3% in RMB. Like-for-like growth excluding the Sun Art and Intime disposals was 11%. Total Cloud revenue growth of 38% and external-customer revenue growth of 40% have different scopes. Segment revenue totals require intercompany eliminations and corporate adjustments.
The YoY and QoQ figures at the top are in B$, translated at each quarter’s average exchange rate. Company-reported growth rates in the narrative are in RMB and may differ because of currency effects.
02 Earnings sustainability · From operating income to net income
The operating result was a loss of 0.123 B$. In contrast, net interest and investment income of 4.886 B$ supported consolidated net income. Consolidated net income of 3.395 B$, income attributable to the parent of 3.690 B$ and income attributable to ordinary shareholders of 3.681 B$ are distinct figures.
Company adjusted EBITA was 0.737 B$, down 84% year over year. GAAP operating results and adjusted EBITA should not be compared as the same measure. The company attributed the earnings decline mainly to investment in technology businesses, quick commerce and user experience.

03 Cash flow quality · Net income → OCF → FCF
Quarterly OCF was 1.359 B$, and company FCF was −2.499 B$. The company identified quick commerce, Qwen app user acquisition and cloud infrastructure spending as drivers of lower cash flow.
Company cash CapEx was 3.884 B$. The FCF calculation excludes certain investments related to land-use rights and office properties and includes adjustments for customer protection deposits and intangible assets, so it differs from OCF−total cash CapEx.

FCF versus previous quarter · 1.601 → −2.499 B$, 4.100 B$ deterioration.
04 Financial capacity · Net debt and payment obligations
Previous-quarter net cash · 2025-12-31
Cash and current investments 44.062 / Debt 37.571 B$
Current-quarter net cash · 2026-03-31
Cash and current investments 41.583 / Debt 37.692 B$

Company-reported cash and other liquid investments were 75.504 B$ at the period-end exchange rate. This scope includes long-term treasury investments and is broader than cash and current investments under the common definition below. Note that different cash definitions can substantially change net debt.
Common definition · Cash and current investments = cash equivalents + current investments and deposits. Debt = carrying amount of interest-bearing borrowings (current + noncurrent), excluding separately reported lease liabilities. This differs from total liabilities of 113.555 B$. Restricted cash, noncurrent securities and noncurrent deposits are excluded from cash and current investments.
05 Investment, capital allocation and cash returns
Cloud growth and AI commercialization are positive demand signals, but the company as a whole posted an operating loss and FCF deficit. Check whether better quick-commerce economics per order translate into actual reductions in earnings and cash losses.
This quarter, cash CapEx/revenue is 11.0% and company-defined FCF/revenue is −7.1%. These ratios should not be used as a simple ranking of companies with different business models and FCF definitions.
06 Next-quarter and full-year outlook: implications
The official release described continued AI and Cloud investment and improved quick-commerce unit economics. This report does not invent estimated guidance for next-quarter revenue ranges or the timing of a profitability recovery where no numerical figures were disclosed.

Indented rows are components or reference items for the parent metric. Net cash = cash and current investments − debt. Depending on the company definition, FCF may include additional adjustments such as lease principal and therefore differ from operating cash flow − cash CapEx. See the cash flow discussion for the detailed definition.
Annual totals and year-to-date totals appear before each year’s quarters. Revenue, earnings and cash flow are sums of quarterly figures; margin is total operating income ÷ total revenue; net cash, cash and debt are balances at the end of the last quarter. Do not treat totals covering different lengths of time as directly comparable annual figures.
Net cash = cash and current investments − debt. A negative figure indicates net debt. Changes in FCF and net cash are shown as absolute amounts in B$. Quarterly figures have not been adjusted to force reconciliation with disclosed annual totals.
Comparison bases, calculation methods and quarterly sources
Calculation and presentation · Amounts in B$. Figures disclosed in millions of US dollars are divided by 1,000 without altering the source values. Where only cumulative cash flows are available, the previous cumulative period within the same fiscal year is deducted. YoY, QoQ and margins are calculated using amounts before display rounding. Earnings changes from negative or 0 bases are expressed as profit/loss transitions and absolute amounts.
