EARNINGS REVIEW
AMD FY25 Q2 earnings report
Historical earnings report · Management guidance reflects expectations at the time of the release, not subsequent outcomes. The financial comparison uses the site’s normalized dataset, including comparative figures restated in later filings.
MI308 charges separated growth from reported profitability.
Assessment · MI308 charges separated growth from reported profitability. Reading consolidated margins alongside FCF separates business scale from cash realization. The next assessment depends on the business-specific checks set out below.
01 Business performance and growth drivers
Data Center 3.2 B$(+14%), Client 2.5 B$(+67%), Gaming 1.1 B$(+73%), Embedded 0.824 B$(−4%).
Versus the preceding quarter, consolidated revenue changed by +0.247 B$ and operating profit by -0.940 B$; operating margin changed by -12.6 percentage points. Segment commentary explains the consolidated result. Sequential changes without controlling for acquisitions, seasonality and product transitions are not long-term growth rates.
02 Profit quality and margins
Roughly 0.8 B$ in inventory-related charges left GAAP/non-GAAP gross margins at 40%/43%; excluding the charges, non-GAAP margin was about 54%.
On consolidated revenue of 7.685 B$, operating margin was -1.7% and net margin 11.3%. Net profit differed from operating profit by +1.006 B$, reflecting non-operating items, taxes and related effects. This difference cannot by itself be attributed to product demand or operating competitiveness.
The main bridge from a 0.134 B$ operating loss to 0.872 B$ of net income was tax and discontinued operations. IRS relief relating to dual consolidated losses led to a 0.853 B$ release of uncertain-tax-position reserves; the quarter’s total income-tax benefit was 0.834 B$. Continuing-operations net income of 0.768 B$ was supplemented by 0.104 B$ from the held-for-sale ZT Systems manufacturing business. Neither the reserve release nor discontinued earnings represents improved GPU operating profitability.
03 Cash flow and financial capacity
Quarterly operating cash flow of 2.011 B$ less capital expenditure of 0.304 B$ gives common-basis FCF of 1.707 B$. Ending cash and cash equivalents were 4.442 B$, versus total liabilities of 15.155 B$. Liabilities are not equivalent to borrowings; cash excludes separately reported short-term investments.
Common-basis FCF was 22.2% of revenue. Both operating cash flow and capital expenditure refer to this quarter, not annual or trailing-twelve-month periods. Working-capital movements and non-cash adjustments mean operating cash flow need not equal net profit.
The common-basis FCF of 1.707 B$ above covers the consolidated company, including discontinued operations. Company-reported continuing-operations FCF was 1.180 B$: continuing operating cash flow of 1.462 B$ less capital expenditure of 0.282 B$. Discontinued operating cash flow of 0.549 B$ less capital expenditure of 0.022 B$ contributed 0.527 B$, explaining the difference. The 22.2% ratio above therefore does not isolate ongoing cash generation; company-defined continuing FCF was approximately 15.4% of revenue.
04 Management commentary and contemporaneous guidance
Lisa Su identified the MI350 ramp and EPYC/Ryzen share gains as second-half drivers.
Next-quarter guidance: revenue 8.7±0.3 B$, non-GAAP gross margin 54%, excluding China MI308 revenue.
05 Risks and next checks
Track export licenses, MI350 ramp and PC/Gaming recovery separately; the divergence between operating loss and net profit requires examining non-operating items.

CY denotes the calendar quarter with the greatest overlap with the fiscal period. If the first period has no start date, 89 days before its end is used only for calendar mapping. Financial values are not recalculated into calendar quarters. Incomplete years show totals of included quarters; cash, liabilities, borrowings and net cash use the last period-end balance. QoQ and YoY show absolute changes; margin changes are percentage points. Dashes indicate missing evidence or incomparable periods or definitions. Total liabilities never substitute for borrowings.
Definitions and evidence coverage
A dash means unavailable or undisclosed, not zero. Company-defined FCF may differ from total operating cash flow less common-basis CapEx. Total liabilities are accounting liabilities, not interest-bearing debt.
